Great system, with a couple exceptions4
I own a new 40″ Sony Bravia LCD that I hooked this system up to. I was very impressed with its sound and its wide range of features for the price! However, there were a couple areas that I feel need to be addressed.

PROS:
- Excellent sound, especially the Movie DCS mode which adds a ton of depth to any movie
- Easy setup
- Excellent integration with a Sony TV. I can fully control my LCD from the receiver remote after hooking up the HDMI cables.
- Full HDMI switching makes initial connection and switching between sources a snap. I can switch between cable and my PS3 with 1 button.
- Wide range of format handling, including Linear PCM.
- Wide range of sound modes.
- No color distortion issues when switching between HDMI sources. This seemed to be a problem in older models.

CONS:
- I found the bass to be a little lacking due to the fact that the subwoofer is passive. I swapped the included one out with this: Yamaha YST-SW216BL Advanced YST II Front-Firing Active Subwoofer and it brought the sound to a whole new level!
- Uses proprietary speaker wire connections. Sony makes it very hard to swap the subwoofer like I described previously because the receiver uses proprietary plugs for the speakers instead of generic speaker wire attachments. The system comes with 4 thin speaker wires with plugs to the receiver on one end, and bare wire on the other to hook up to the satellite speakers. However, the subwoofer’s is HARD WIRED, so it can’t be detached at all. What’s worse is that Sony only sells their speaker wires in packs of 5, for a whopping $55.
To use my new subwoofer, I simply found an aftermarket plug with a small length of wire on eBay, spliced it with some standard 18 gauge wire of my own and hooked it up to my new sub. Voila, it worked like a charm.

OVERALL:
Out of the box, the system is a solid 4/5. With a powered subwoofer and a little bit of handiwork to get around Sony’s greed, it can be improved to 5/5.

Just about perfect except for HDMI and center speaker issues4
As someone who was in the process of purchasing my first blu-ray player I was looking to upgrade my older Sony surround sound system as well. I was looking for a couple of things in a new system: One, that it had plenty of HDMI inputs and two, that it had a high-quality sound for the price point.

As for the most important item, the sound, this is a great system. People have said it is like listening to a $500-1000 system. I don’t know if it sounds as good as a $1000 system, but I would say it does sound wonderful like a $500-700 system so for the price it can’t be beat. The highs sound very clear and crisp and the bass is deep with depth without losing too much ‘punch’ or getting too ‘muddy’. The only minor issue I have with sound is that when dialogue gets loud the center speaker (on rare occasions) ‘flinches’ and has the slightest sound like feedback. It could be the case itself vibrating as I have it sitting against the T.V. base/stand so this could be the problem as well.

Out of the box the system takes a little time to set up (as does any surround system with the speakers, etc). This system looks sleek and is identical to the companion blu ray player I purchased to go with it; they have a matching black color, are matching in size and are similar in faceplate size and in overall sleek design. The receiver for this unit is about half the height and depth as my old Sony one, leaving me more space to add other components into my rack.

The speaker wires are thin and the speakers each have proprietary connections going into the receiver but it sounds so good I don’t feel any need to replace the wires so this is a moot point for me.

Once the system is arranged and the speakers all connected there is a little microphone you can plug into the back of the unit, place it in what would be the ideal listening spot in the room and using the remote you can access a little sequence of sound tests in the menu to have the unit self-calibrate itself. This is a nice feature to use to get started but I found tweaking was needed to get the best possible sound…the bass was way too loud using the self-calibration. However, in all other aspects as far as distance of the individual speakers and the volume level of each speaker, the self-calibration did very well and was pretty accurate in these areas.

The unit’s set-up and menu is all accessed by remote and uses kind of a branching mode in which to reach all of the individual settings. You have to look at the little screen on the receiver and this can be tedious but is easier once you are familiar with how to access the various areas of the menu. An on-screen menu would have been a great addition for this unit (but of course would also have raised the cost).

The HDMI connections for me were great. I have a blu ray player, a cable/satellite tuner and a 5-disc DVD upconverter/CD player all using HDMI cables for optimal performance…being able to run all 3 of those into the receiver and then running just one HDMI cable from the receiver to the HDTV cut back on the spaghetti of cables and gave me the best signal performance possible from all of my components. When you select the input on the receiver (blu ray player, cable, etc) that is what the receiver will play as far as audio and is the signal that will be sent to the HDTV as well.

However, there are two issues with this HDMI set up. First, you will not be able to use more than one component at a time. For instance, you can not listen to a CD while at the same time watch video from your cable or satellite because you will not be able to choose more than one input to play at a time UNLESS you connect them directly to each other instead of running them all through the receiver. Then you could play a CD through the receiver and play video from the cable or satellite box directly to the TV (bypassing the video around the receiver).

The second problem is that the audio and video does not always output correctly with the selection of the input on the receiver. For example, I have noticed that on occasion I may select the cable/satellite on the receiver and the audio will be there but I will not get a picture on the HDTV even though the TV is tuned to the right setting. If I turn the input on and off on the receiver or turn the TV itself on and off suddenly the picure miraculously comes on. Other times I will play a blu ray disc and I can get the picture on the TV but the audio will not be recognized or played back by the receiver (even though the picture and sound are going through the same HDMI cable) and I will have to either turn the receiver on and off or the blu ray player on and off to get the audio going. I can’t figure out any particular pattern this follows but it does happen frequently…other times it works correctly with no problems. Perhaps this would not happen if all of my equipment was Sony and the components all ‘talked’ to each other better (my HDTV is not a Sony brand). I’m still trying to figure this out as it is annoying. I am always eventually able to get everything working together-it just might take a couple of extra buttons to get there.

One other very important piece of info is that this unit will accept a linear PCM channel for audio. This means you can playback the True HD Dolby and HD DTS Master lossless sountracks on blu ray discs AS LONG AS the blu ray player you are using has the processing for those formats built into it. The companion Sony player (the S360) as well as many newer ones do have the HD soundtrack processing in them.

In the end the performance and sound far outweigh the rare issue with the center speaker and the quirky HDMI input/output problems. If the price of the system was in the $500-600 range I would have to move it to just 3 stars. But the price is great for the quality of sound this unit produces resulting in my 4-star review.

Great sound, good price and easy set up.5
When I recently bought a new Sony 40″ LCD TV I discovered the TV speakers were better than my old cheapie surround sound system. I then bought this Sony HTSS360. I’m a long way from an audio expert but I know good sound when I hear it and this system has it all the way from the high to the low pitched sounds. I can now hear even faint sounds/sound effects I never knew existed with my old sound system. Between the new TV and this surround sound system all my existing DVD’s are like watching all new movies. It may be a little on the subjective side but my movies appear to have better color and clarity than when the feed was direct from my DVD player. Very easy to set up and play using one remote with the Bravia Sync. In my case just two HDMI cables, sat box and DVD player, to the receiver and one HDMI out to the TV, easy.

This entire series has given me endless pleasure from commence to achieve. Each episode presents a different perspective on the British (and very occasionally the American) good system. You will also secure changing perspectives on British culture and British life. The acting is suitable, as is the music. Highly recommended to those who like spirited and well constructed courtroom dramas.

I have been watching courtroom dramas (and comedies) for many years. As an American, the only British courtroom display I ever saw was Rumpole of the Bailey, and I came across Kavanagh while searching for something similar. It is, if you will, the dramatic Rumpole. John Thaw is a sizable actor and the stories are tantalizing. I hope that additional episodes will be brought to DVD.

As someone who’s been eager in & fervent with the sustainability movement for a long time now Mike Reynolds (the “hero” of this documentary) is the type of individual I wish I could have crossed paths with, worked with & learned from in person! This film documents his evolutionary move from his first buildings in the Modern Mexico desert to his entrance into the right arena facing an uphill battle to pass a bill that would allow architects the freedom to experiment with building designs in a controlled environment, to design mistakes & learn from them. Michael presents a compelling case, both to stodgy legislators as well as the audience that this is not only a proper plan but absolutely famous. The essence of his message is that we must redesign society (not objective the building codes) to be able to adapt forcefully & gracefully to swiftly change. It’s a chronicle about unexpected obstacles and the power of an adaptable & persistent spirit in overcoming them. The film takes us to India’s Andaman Islands where Mr. Reynolds uses his unconventional building technique to rebuild a community devastated by tsunami and demonstrates how swift sure change can be when not hampered by ideological resistance and red tape. The pacing & pace of the movie are perfect, the musical fetch is broad as well, complimentary to the action & noteworthy without being overwhelming (or overdramatic) . It is even amusing at times like the “romantic” tune playing while Mike’s newfound ally (a converted knight for his cause from within the system) works her contrivance through a sea of resistant & skeptical senators to attend try to pick up his bill passed.

Garbage Warrior will not give you the latest cutting edge information about sustainable compose (though it certainly is a grand primer), nor is it a tubby biography of Mr. Reynolds (though it covers the period of his life relevant to the film superbly) or of the ins, outs & tangents of the Earthship movement. What it did do, for me, is whet my appetite for more & reminded me why I am alive to in this type of thing to inaugurate with. This movie is pure inspiration, what you do with it & where you engage it is up to you!

What a visionary! Such courage & devotion to throw himself into designing & constructing astounding houses that fair captivate you in apprehension! These homes are out of tires, bottles, cans, & glass & solar/wind power! The movie about this architect is so inspirational & motivating & it opens your eyes to bigger recount of corruption between politicians & positive organizations like the architectural society he was once allotment of & how remarkable bs influence they have over politicians & the device we live! The 1 guy in the film that filibustered it was the same jackass that looked up at the camera earlier when the Garbage Warrior was making his rounds through the offices & meeting rooms of the Spot Assembly Building! When I saw him on the Senate floor calling the roster - I pointed him out to my friends who were also watching & belted out “That’s your enemy just there! That a#%hole! Peep what he’s doing! He’s filibustering the whole damned thing on purpose!”

In the waste though, the Garbage Warrior won of course! Yaaaaaayyyyy!!!!

You must behold this film!

I first watched this present on the History channel at the beginning of last winter and liked it immediately. So I pre-ordered the DVD on amazon fair away. It arrived last week and is currently making the rounds in my office!

Many a time, I have visualized how our precocious planet formed and evolved based on paleobiological evidence. I always regain a feeling of euphoria whenever I imagine a pristine Earth with dynamics that have been changing over mind-numbing time scales. Well, the graphics in this demonstrate approach splendid conclude to my absorb imagination.

The playback, divided by mostly uneven time segments, starts at around 4.4 billion years ago and eventually works its arrangement to the last ice age before briefly plot on the planet’s future. There is a time slider that briefly appears at the inaugurate of each time segment. Yes, dinosaurs are mentioned and shown but only briefly. Yup, stromatalites are in there as well along with Trilobites. It should be famed that the Cambrian Explosion and the Carboniferous are mentioned. For some reason, I was surprised to learn that granite first formed several billion years ago.

Other subjects discussed in depth include plate tectonics (continents, mountains, etc.), land inhabitation by flora and marine animals and super-volcanoes. The DVD ends with a bunch of scientists state on the future of Earth. I decided not to read too considerable into their predictions as I won’t be around if/when what they predict happens.

I’ve had this DVD on autobuy and must say what a savor it is. We have watched it countless times, my hubby and I, as we appreciate series like these.

We loved every petite of it and the digital graphics was respectable, very realistic. You sit there riveted to your conceal as you peek things unfold. It’s mind-boggling, watching how the earth was created.

Earth has a past we can never comprehend, a exhibit we live in and lift for granted and a future that is honest too scary to sight. But all in all, what an incredible planet we live in.

This DVD takes us on a glide to the very beginning. 4.5 billion year to be staunch, when the planet was formed by meteors colliding in area.

Earth goes from a seething hellish mass of fiery molten rock, through numerous major changes that takes billion of years and finally to the indicate day wonder we live in.

And that is not all, we also have a witness into the future, when Earth will likely extinguish up as barren and tedious as Mars. Now, there’s a scary view.

But it seems we don’t have to horror honest yet, according to the experts we level-headed have a few billions years to go before earth becomes hell again. Phew, that’s a relief! Quite frankly anyone would be stunned of it!

This is another DVD worth the money spent.

Customer Reviews:

Amazing little machine…5
I’m not a computer guru, I can’t quote specs at a person, but I know when something gets the job done and this little guy does. Today I ran for six hours on battery, had another hour and a half left when I plugged in. During this time, I was surfing the web, streaming youtube and hulu, and working with Photoshop and Pro Show Producer. It even handled encoding video with Producer like a champ. It never got hot, just luke warm, it never seemed to lag, set up was a breeze, touchpad is nice and responsive, it’s just been an absolute joy and it looks beautiful to boot. The speakers aren’t very loud, but for everything else you get with this machine, I’m not going to quibble or take away stars for speaker volume. I love it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable machine with long battery life that still packs a little power.

Really like this little guy5
Just received it yesterday. Was the quickest easiest setup I’ve ever had to do.

Even on the first full charge and nearly constant use. I can;t wear it out. I haven’t stopped playing on it except to sleep. It’s fast, light, powerful and good looking. I upgraded another (larger) laptop with Win 7 Home. I liked it a lot. This one with the factory loaded version. I like even better.

This just may have my favorite keyboard ever. The whole thing is just great. Well, with one exception. But then I already knew about it. The sound. I sure wish they had put it on top instead of underneath. Not a real problem for me. I prefer using headphones anyhow. I like the built in mouse pad. But again prefer my wireless mouse.

I just didn’t think those two little things were enough to knock a star off. I also knew there wasn’t an optical drive. I’ve got a USB cd/dvd hard drive so that’s not an issue either. Wasn’t sure if I would really like the white. I do though. It’s not milk white and the pattern I find interesting.

Especially appreciated there not being a ton of software to remove. That hasn’t been the case with any other computer I’ve owned. Gotta stop rambling here. Oh, the screen is great too. I tied the eco mode. Didn’t hate it but am using equal setting and still get plenty of battery time.

Update: I went to the Toshiba website to see if there were any driver updates. There were several. One was for sound. I downloaded and installed it. It’s made a considerable difference in the volume of my speakers. Still lovin’ this little guy. Using it more than my 17.3″ laptop.

excellent computer5
Very good computer. I had a Dell Inspirion that was 5.5 years old and this is the perfect replacement since I need a more portable computer. I am a student that needs to take her computer to class via bike every day and also travel with it from Europe to the USA. Perfect for a person with basic computer skills and wants to use it everyday everywhere. Ideal for college students!!

Pros: size, speed, weight, no glare screen, easy set up and installation, comes with Windows 7, comes with a webcam (not the best, but great that it’s included for skype use), very quiet/not noticable fan for cooling down the system

Cons: adapter is only 100-110V and unlike my Dell, this cannot be used in Europe (no mentioning of this anywhere), volume is low but just need to configure the sound upon arrival (very easy to do, see reviews on the black model on how to do this)

This is extremly well done. the scenery shots are shapely. The yarn is a incredible variation on several feeble ghost/haunting stories combined with a fresh twist. Large family film.

A delectable, prankish adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s account. Exciting and sharp as well as satisfying. Enjoyabole for the whole family.

Not your typical Cinderella tale…

What do you gain when you mix a bit of fairy tale-Cinderella world with some Shrek, throw in some Princess Bride, a runt bit of Disney’s Robin Hood (look Hester the snake), along with a petite singing, and some random modern-day references thrown in for respectable measure? You secure Ella Enchanted, Miramax’s newest gem of a film, narrated by Eric Lazy and starring the blooming Anne Hathaway and the dreamy Hugh Dancy.

Ella of Frell (Anne Hathaway) has a gift. Er, I mean, a curse. A gift, a curse, it all depends on how you inspect at it: no matter what you mutter Ella to do, she must obey. A rather capricious fairy named Lucinda (Vivica A. Fox) gave baby Ella the “gift of obedience”: anything spoken to Ella as a hiss, she must automatically do. Lickety-split forward a few years: Ella is now a young lady, and no one except her aunt Mandy (Minnie Driver) knows about this gift/curse. Not even her best friend and fellow civil rights activist Arieda (played by “Bend It Like Beckham’s” Parminder K. Nagra) is aware of her “jam.” When her father brings home a faulty fresh stepmother (Joanna Lumley) and two detestable stepsisters, Hattie (Lucy Punch) and Olive (Jennifer Higham), Ella must deal with their demanding ways, hopefully without giving away her secret!

Her stepsister Hattie is the very obsessive and very active president of the Prince Charmont fan club! She and her friends go absolutely ga-ga, every time they even deem of the hunky prince (distinguished less when they view him) . Prince “Char” (Hugh Dancy) as they lovingly call him, is the heir apparent to the throne currently held for him by his rank uncle Edgar (Cary Elwes) . The coronation day coming soon, and the kingdom in a bit of upheavel due to the heavy handed rule of Edgar, ogres, giants, and elves alike are all ready for a change! But will everyone come by Prince Charmont as their recent king?

One magical day when Ella and Prince Charmont scandalous paths, it is treasure at first peruse for Prince Char. But the feisty and proud Ella is not so expeditiously to descend for the prince; she is obvious he is as unfeeling and uncaring as his uncle is. And since Ella actively fights for ogres’ rights, along with any other magical creature in her kingdom (giants, elves, etc.), she wants nothing to do with the pleasing Char. But when their paths maintain crossing again and again…what’s a girl to do!?!

And so Ella of Frell sets out to obtain her fairy godmother Lucinda, to ask her to bewitch wait on her “gift” of obedience, armed with Mandy’s boyfriend book named Benny (who can describe anyone, anywhere) and elf pal Slannen, they encounter mighty along the intention (including Prince Char!) . They near the land of the giants only to contemplate that Lucinda has already left, and Ella is forced by her obedience gift to pause and narrate for the giants (her rendition of “Someone to Fancy,” is exciting and very well done!) . But when Ella is finally commanded to do something that tests her very will…can she net Lucinda in time? Will she demolish up doing something she will forever regret?

Content: This film had very shrimp objectionable content: there were a few general references that would be above most children’s heads, very petite language (a few words), and only some still violence. Given a PG rating: “For some uncouth language and violence.” A young girl (with some aid) defeats ogres and fights various magical creatures, giants are shown slaving in a field, someone is “poisoned,” and a giant falls in esteem with an elf.

A high energy family-friendly film that reminds you again, why every girl waits for her prince and wishes for that happily ever after (but has some serious fun in the process!) . The current day references did not detract from the tale at all, but added a bit of fun and light-hearted teasing to an racy movie. I laughed and laughed at the sometimes humorous and sometimes serious jokes that poked fun at various original day places and things. One particular moment that caused a titanic laugh: Ella and Arieda are leaving a building and move down a “medieval escalator” (a wooden area of though-provoking stairs, with a giant wheel turned by servants) . From “Medieval Teen” magazine and trips to “Ye Olde Shopping Mall, to an elf who wants to be a lawyer and giants who worship to pronounce, from the “VI Seasons” hotel and “Frell Community College,” this energetic and radiant film will leave you laughing, and feeling light and free.

I honest wanted to post a review to let anyone who has seen this movie know that it should NOT be outmoded to assume the book. I assume I read somewhere that the author was actually eager with putting together the screenplay, but if so, I cannot imagine WHY she permitted some of the modifications. I do understand that some “interpretation” was important, because the book was very “LITERARY” in the sense that some of parts could only be “read” and couldn’t be “acted out” in any though-provoking fashion (there are several exchanges of correspondence between Ella and the prince for example, and how insensible is it to have characters reading letters aloud? ) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ella Enchanted! Click Here

Granted, if you like this movie, that’s lovely with me–it has lots of graceful actors and actresses, cutsey bits, with music and all that “glitzy” production kind of thing that looks noble in a movie. But the book was a improbable, spirited, magic story that was not even touched upon by this atrocity of a movie as far as that goes. I wouldn’t have paid a cent to behold this if I had realized the main sage had been buried beneath so powerful nonsense and Hollywood style. I LOVED THE BOOK AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING IT AS A Delicate RETELLING OF THE CINDERELLA Sage.

And if you are looking for a mildly though-provoking but pointless movie to gape, and do not question it to assume the magic and beauty of the fresh narrative, it’s elegant.
